Care of the succulent plant Aloe x delaetii or Hybrid aloe

The genus Aloe is included in family Xanthorrhoeaceae, which includes about 500 species of succulent plants native to Africa, Madagascar and the Middle East. Some species are: Aloe x delaetii, Aloe x caesiaAloe pluridensAloe esculentaAloe vera, Aloe variegata, Aloe thraskii, Aloe tenuior, Aloe suprafoliata, Aloe striata, Aloe plicatilis, Aloe mitriformis, Aloe marlothii, Aloe maculata, Aloe juvenna, Aloe ferox, Aloe ciliaris, Aloe barberae, Aloe aristata, Aloe arborescens, Aloe aculeata, Aloe x spinosissima.

Common name: Hybrid aloe. It is a hybrid between the species Aloe ciliaris and Aloe succotrina.

Aloe x delaetii is a compact succulent plant that produces lateral shoots and grows up to 1 meter (3.28 feet) tall. The fleshy leaves, arranged in a rosette, are bluish-green or light green with reddish tones (if it receives plenty of sun) and have serrated margins. It produces flower stems above the leaves with reddish or orange flowers. It can bloom year-round.

Hybrid aloe is used in rockeries, to cover dry, sunny slopes, as a single specimen, in cactus and succulent gardens, and in pots for patios and terraces.

Aloe x delaetii grows well in full sun or light shade exposures and in warm, dry climates. It withstands occasional frosts down to -5°C (23 ºF).

The soil can be a commercial potting mix for cacti and succulents or a regular garden soil with 25% coarse sand or perlite.

Hybrid aloe is a very drought-resistant plant that requires moderate watering, waiting until the potting mix has completely dried out. In spring, water every 3 weeks, in summer every 2 weeks, greatly reduce watering from autumn onwards, and hardly water at all in winter.

Fertilize monthly with mineral fertilizer for cacti and succulents during spring and summer.

Prunes wilted inflorescences and dry leaves.

Hybrid aloe is resistant to common pests and diseases but sensitive to excess moisture.

Aloe x delaetii is propagated by dividing the offspring produced by the mother plant and from seeds sown in spring.
