Agave palmeri is a relatively fast-growing succulent plant with rosette leaves that reach 90 cm (2.95 feet) in height; it sometimes produces shoots. The fleshy, rigid leaves measure up to 120 cm (3.93 feet) in length, are blue-green in colour and have a serrated edge and thick spines at the apex. The greenish-yellow flowers appear on long flower stems up to 5 m (16.5 feet); it blooms only once in summer after several years and then the plant dies. Palmer's century plant is used in rockeries, in large pots, in small groups and as isolated specimens. It is ideal for Mediterranean climates and arid climates. Agave palmeri needs full sun exposure and a warm, dry climate although it can withstand frosts down to -12 ºC (10.4 ºF). The ideal soil would be a very well-drained calcareous substrate although it can grow in stony, sandy and rocky soils. It is very important that it has excellent drainage. Palmer's Agave is a very drought-resistant plant that needs moderate watering, waiting for the substrate to dry completely. Fertilize once in spring with a mineral fertilizer for cacti and succulent plants. Pruning is not necessary. Agave palmeri is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to excess humidity. Palmer's century plant propagates from seeds and by separating shoots if the mother plant produces them. |
