Care of the shrub Ligustrum japonicum Texanum or Japanese privet |
The genus Ligustrum, family Oleaceae, includes about 50 species of trees and shrubs native to Asia, Europe and North Africa. Some species are: Ligustrum japonicum, Ligustrum lucidum, Ligustrum vulgare, Ligustrum sinense, Ligustrum ovalifolium, Ligustrum obtusifolium. Common names: Japanese privet. This species is native to Japan and Korea. They are shrubs or evergreen trees that reach 3 meters (9.84 feet) in height. The opposite, oval fleshy leaves are glossy dark green. They produce panicles of scented white flowers. They bloom in summer and fall. The fruits are shaped like purple berries. These fast-growing plants are used to form hedges, in bushy groups, as isolated specimens (arboreal size) and in large pots for patios and terraces. Japanese privet is ideal for big cities. Ligustrum japonicum Texanum grows in full sun or semi-shade exposures. It has good resistance to frost. Japanese privet grows in any well-drained soil that holds a little moisture; use a normal garden soil with coarse sand and organic matter. Planting is done in autumn. Water regularly waiting until the substrate has almost dried. Ligustrum japonicum Texanum resists several days of drought. Fertilize with compost or manure in the fall. Prune in early spring if grown as a hedge. Japanese privet is a quite resistant plant to pests and diseases that can be attacked by mites and aphids if it suffers prolonged drought. Ligustrum japonicum Texanum is propagated from seed (slower process) and by woody cuttings in autumn. |
