Care of the shrub Ligustrum lucidum or Chinese privet |
The genus Ligustrum, family Oleaceae, includes about 50 species of trees and shrubs native to Asia, Europe and North Africa. Some species are: Ligustrum lucidum, Ligustrum vulgare, Ligustrum japonicum, Ligustrum sinense, Ligustrum ovalifolium, Ligustrum obtusifolium. Common names: Chinese privet, Glossy privet, Wax-leaf privet, Tree privet, Broad-leaf privet. This species is native to China. They are conical evergreen shrubs that reach 10 meters (32.8 feet) in height. The attractive oval leaves are glossy dark green. They produce panicles filled with small scented white flowers. They bloom in summer and early fall. The fruits are purple berries. These fast-growing plants are used to form hedges, in bushy groups, as single specimens, and in large pots for balconies, patios, and terraces. Ligustrum lucidum grows in full sun and semi-shade exposures. It resists frosts down to -10 ºC (14 ºF). Chinese privet grows in any type of well-drained soil but prefers it to contain organic matter. The planting is done in autumn or winter. Water regularly in spring and summer so that the substrate does not dry out completely; reduce watering in fall and winter. Fertilize with manure or compost in autumn. Ligustrum lucidum is a resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases that can be attacked by mites and aphids if it suffers drought. Wax-leaf privet is propagated from seed sown in spring (it is a slow process) and by woody cuttings in fall. |
