Care of the plant Artemisia capillaris or Capillary wormwood

The genus Artemisia, family Asteraceae, comprises 500 species of shrubs and herbaceous plants native to almost all continents. Some species are: Artemisia capillaris, Artemisia pedemontana, Artemisia californica, Artemisia arborescens, Artemisia afra, Artemisia absinthium, Artemisia cana, Artemisia rigida.

Common names: Virgate wormwood, Redstem wormwood, capillary wormwood, Yin-chen wormwood, Japanese Wormwood. Scientific synonym: Artemisia scoparia. This species is native to Asia.

Artemisia capillaris is a compact herbaceous perennial plant that reaches 45 cm (1.5 feet) in height. The thin, deep green leaves have an elegant feathery appearance. The insignificant yellowish flowers have no decorative interest. It blooms in summer.

Capillary wormwood is used in flowerbeds together with flowering plants, on dry, sunny slopes, in rockeries and as an isolated specimen. It is not recommended for coastal gardens.

Artemisia capillaris prefers full sun exposure and a warm, dry climate. It resists frosts down to -5 ºC (23 ºF).

Yin-chen wormwood grows in any type of well-drained soil, whether poor, dry, sandy or stony.

Japanese Wormwood resists drought quite well, so it is recommended to water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry.

Capillary wormwood does not need fertilizer.

Prune lightly at the end of winter to maintain a compact appearance.

Artemisia scoparia is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to excess moisture in the roots.

Capillary wormwood propagates from seeds sown in spring in a seedbed, by cuttings in summer and by division in autumn or spring.
