The genus Tylecodon, family Crassulaceae, comprises about 60 species of succulent plants native to southern Africa. Some species are: Tylecodon buchholzianus, Tylecodon wallichii, Tylecodon aridimontanus, Tylecodon reticulatus. Scientific synonym: Cotyledon buchholziana. This species is distributed in Namibia and South Africa. Tylecodon bucholzianus is a slow-growing, bushy succulent plant with a thick stem that reaches 30 cm (11.8") in height. The fleshy, cylindrical, green leaves, about 10 cm (3.93") long, sprout in spring and fall in summer. It produces pink or red flowers in branched inflorescences. It blooms in summer. Due to its size, Cotyledon buchholziana is usually used in pots for balconies, terraces and patios. Tylecodon bucholzianus grows in full sun and light shade exposures. It does not resist frost; the safe winter temperature is 6 ºC (42.8 ºF). Commercial substrate for cacti and succulent plants can be used as soil. Always water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry. In summer the plant goes dormant: do not water or water once every 40-50 days. Fertilize every 50 days in winter and spring with fertilizer for cacti and succulent plants. It tolerates light pruning in spring to maintain a compact shape. Tylecodon bucholzianus does not usually present serious problems with pests and diseases. Cotyledon buchholziana is easily propagated by cuttings taken in late autumn. |
