Care of the plant Symphoricarpos albus or Common snowberry

The genus Symphoricarpos, family Caprifoliaceae, comprises 15 species of shrubs native to Central and North America. Some species are: Symphoricarpos albus, Symphoricarpos occidentalis, Symphoricarpos x chenaultii, Symphoricarpos mexicanus, Symphoricarpos sinensis, Symphoricarpos microphyllus.

Common names: Common snowberry, Snowberry Bush. This species is native to Canada and nothern USA.

They are rounded deciduous shrubs that reach 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) in height. The leaves, of an intense green color, have a rounded or oblong-elliptical shape. The small pink flowers are bell-shaped and appear in clusters. They bloom in early summer. They produce decorative white fruits.

Common snowberry is used as isolated specimens, in bushy groups, to form hedges and screens and on slopes.

Symphoricarpos albus grows in full sun and semi-shade exposures; produces more flowers and fruit in full sun. It resists frost well.

The soil can be a normal well-drained garden soil with coarse sand and containing a little organic matter but Common snowberry will also grow in poor but well-drained soils.

Water regularly, waiting for the substrate to be almost dry; Snowberry Bush resists a few days of drought.

Fertilize in early spring with compost or manure.

Lightly prune the tips of the branches at the end of winter to maintain a compact habit.

Symphoricarpos albus is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases that can be attacked by fungi if there is excess watering.

Common snowberry is propagated by separating shoots, by cuttings and from seeds.
