Care of the plant Saxifraga x arendsii or Mossy saxifrage

The genus Saxifraga, family Saxifragaceae, includes more than 400 species of herbaceous plants native to cold and alpine regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Some species and hybrids are: Saxifraga x arendsii, Saxifraga stolonifera, Saxifraga umbrosa, Saxifraga rotundifolia, Saxifraga fortunei, Saxifraga retusa, Saxifraga granulata, Saxifraga cotyledon.

Common names: Mossy saxifrage, Rockfoil. These hybrids are the result of crosses between Saxifraga exarata, Saxifraga hypnoides, Saxifraga moschata and Saxifraga rosacea.

They are slow-growing, cushion-like herbaceous perennials to 20 cm (7.87") tall. The small linear, oval or oblong leaves are glossy green. The attractive, small flowers can be white, pink, or red in color and appear above the leaves. They bloom in spring until mid-summer.

Mossy saxifrage is used in rockeries, in mixed borders, to cover slopes, in pots and in cracks in walls.

Saxifraga x arendsii needs semi-shade exposure and a cool climate; it does not like intense heat. Frost resistant to -25 ºC (-13 ºF).

The soil can be normal garden soil that is well drained and contains plenty of organic matter.

Rockfoil does not need fertilizer.

Prune faded flowers.

Saxifraga x arendsii is a plant quite resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to excessive heat and the accumulation of water in the roots.

Mossy saxifrage is propagated by division in early spring.
