Care of the tree Sophora toromiro or Toromiro

The genus Sophora, family Fabaceae, includes 40 species of trees and shrubs native to almost all continents. Some species are: Sophora toromiro, Sophora japonica, Sophora macrocarpa, Sophora longicarinata.

Common name: Toromiro. This species is native to Easter Island although it's extinct in nature.

They are small trees or shrubs that reach 3 meters (9.84 feet) in height. They have odd-pinnate leaves 10 cm (3.93") long, deep green in color and with hairy elliptical leaflets on the underside. The attractive flowers appear in yellow clusters. They produce pod-shaped fruits.

It's used, if found, as an isolated specimen in the garden.

Sophora toromiro needs exposure to full sun or light shade. They resist frost.

They grow in poor, calcareous soils but prefer fertile, deep and well-drained soils.

Water moderately all year round; they resist several days of drought.

They do not need pruning.

Fertilize in autumn each year with manure or with humus.

They are resistant to pests but can suffer fungal diseases if there is excess moisture.

They are propagated from seeds but it's a rare plant and it's not common to find such seeds.
