Care of the cactus Myrtillocactus schenckii or Cereus schenckii

The genus Myrtillocactus, family Cactaceae, includes 4 species of cacti native to Mexico and Guatemala. The species in this genus are: Myrtillocactus schenckii, Myrtillocactus geometrizans, Myrtillocactus cochal, Myrtillocactus eichlamii.

Scientific synonym: Cereus schenckii. This species is distributed throughout the states of Chiapas, Puebla and Oaxaca (Mexico) and Guatemala.

Myrtillocactus schenckii is a cactus with a robust, sparsely branched, dark green trunk that reaches 5 m (16.4 feet) in height. It has 7-8 ribs and circular areoles with 6-8 radial spines and a central spine. The creamy flowers are 4 cm (1.57") in diameter. It blooms in summer. The edible fruits are globular berries.

Cereus schenckii is used in rockeries, as a single specimen, in cactus and succulent gardens to form impenetrable barriers, and in deep pots when young.

Myrtillocactus schenckii requires full sun exposure and a warm climate. Although it tolerates light, occasional frosts, it is best not to expose it to temperatures below 5 °C (41 ºF).

The soil can be normal garden soil containing a little organic matter and plenty of coarse sand for good drainage. Repotting is done in spring.

Water moderately, waiting until the substrate has completely dried out. Do not water in winter.

Fertilize in spring and summer every 30 days with mineral fertilizer for cacti.

Pruning is not required.

This plant does not usually present serious pest and disease problems.

Myrtillocactus schenckii propagates from seeds sown in spring and from cuttings in summer.
