Care of the indoor plant Philodendron Birkin or White Wawe |
The genus Philodendron, family Araceae, includes about 120 species of shrubby and arboreal plants native to Tropical America. Some species are: Philodendron Birkin, Philodendron selloum, Philodendron scandens, Philodendron speciosum, Philodendron giganteum, Philodendron verrucosum, Philodendron andreanum, Philodendron hastatum, Philodendron sanguineum, Philodendron giganteum, Philodendron imbe. Common name: White Wawe. This plant is the result of several hybridizations. They are slow-growing evergreen tropical plants that can exceed 1 meter (3.28 feet) in height. The large, heart-shaped leaves are dark green and white; There are varieties with red and cream colors. They do not usually bloom in pots. They are toxic plants by ingestion, even for pets. White Wawe is used as indoor and greenhouse plants. Sometimes it needs tutors to maintain an erect bearing. It's sensitive to air currents and sudden changes in temperature. Do not place it near sources of heat (heating). Philodendron Birkin needs a filtered light exposure avoiding direct sun in the central hours of the day. Do not expose it to temperatures below 14 ºC (57.2 ºF). The soil can be a substrate for indoor plants with coarse sand or perlite to improve drainage. Water regularly with lime-free water in spring and summer so that the substrate never dries out completely. In winter, wait until the substrate has almost dried. White Wawe needs a medium-high environmental humidity, for which it is convenient to place a tray with wet pebbles under the pot and spray the leaves periodically with water without lime. Fertilize once a month with mineral fertilizer for indoor plants in spring and summer. In autumn it is convenient to renew part of the substrate. Philodendron Birkin does not need pruning. If the environmental humidity is low or watering is scarce, it can be attacked by mites or the leaves can turn yellow or curl. White Wawe is propagated by cuttings in spring or summer. |
