Care of the shrub Photinia x fraseri or Red tip photinia |
The genus Photinia, family Rosaceae, comprises 40 species of shrubs and trees native to East and South Asia. Some species are: Photinia x fraseri (hybrid), Photinia serrulata, Photinia villosa, Photinia glabra, Photinia prunifolia, Photinia nussia, Photinia davidiana. Common names: Red tip photinia, Christmas berry, Fraser photinia. This shrub is a hybrid between Photinia serrulata and Photinia glabra. They are fast-growing and easy-growing evergreen shrubs that reach 3 meters (9.84 feet) in height. The leaves are alternate, elongated and shiny; They have different coloration depending on the season: they are green in winter, purple in summer and red when they sprout. They produce small white flowers. They bloom in spring. Red tip photinia is used to form bushy groups, as isolated specimens and to form hedges. Photinia x fraseri needs exposure to full sun or semi-shade and protected from the wind. The soil can be a normal garden substrate that contains organic matter. Christmas berry resists calcareous soils. Water moderately all year long waiting for the substrate to dry; slightly increase watering in summer. Fertilize once a month with organic mineral fertilizer in spring and summer. Red tip photinia does not need pruning. To have red leaves, prune slightly to cause the appearance of new leaves. Photinia x fraseri is a resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases. Christmas berry is propagated by seeds sown in the fall or by cuttings in early spring or fall. |
