Care of the rhizomatous plant Liriope spicata or Creeping lily-turf |
The genus Liriope, family Asparagaceae, comprises 6 species of herbaceous plants native to the Far East. Some species are: Liriope spicata, Liriope muscari, Liriope graminifolia. Common name: Creeping lily-turf. This species comes from China. Liriope spicata is a compact, rhizomatous perennial plant that spreads horizontally and reaches 40 cm (1.31 feet) in height. The linear, upright leaves are bright green. It produces erect flower spikes with small lilac or mauve flowers. It blooms in summer. Creeping lily-turf is used in undergrowth, in flowerbeds and borders, to cover semi-shaded areas of the garden and in pots for patios and terraces. It attracts bees and butterflies. It is ideal for coastal gardens and for large cities. Liriope spicata grows in full sun, semi-shade and shade exposures. It resists frost well. Creeping lily-turf grows in any type of soil but prefers well-drained soil that contains organic matter. Water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry; Liriope spicata resists drought quite well. Fertilize with organic matter in late winter or early spring. Prune wilted inflorescences after flowering and dry leaves at the end of winter. Liriope spicata is resistant to common pests and diseases. Creeping lily-turf is propagated by division in autumn or early spring. |
