Care of the cormous plant Freesia fergusoniae or Riversdale Freesia

The genus Freesia, family Iridaceae, includes 15 species and numerous cultivars of corm plants native to South Africa. Some species are: Freesia fergusoniae, Freesia albaFreesia fucata, Freesia caryophyllacea, Freesia x hybrida, Freesia laxa, Freesia grandiflora, Freesia refracta.

Common names: Riversdale Freesia, Riversdale Kammetjie. This species is native to West Cape.

Freesia fergusoniae is a small cormous plant that reaches 25 cm (0.82 feet) in height. The lanceolate leaves are deep green. The showy and fragrant yellow flowers contrast with the green foliage. It blooms in spring.

Riversdale Freesia is mainly used in pots for patios, balconies, windows and terraces due to its small size but it is also used in rockeries and flowerbeds.

Freesia fergusoniae needs a warm and dry climate and full sun exposure. It is advisable not to expose it to frost.

The soil can be normal garden soil with a little organic matter and 25% coarse sand.

Water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry (about once a week).

Fertilize with organic matter at the time of planting and once a month with mineral fertilizer during flowering.

Prune wilted flower stems and dry leaves.

Freesia fergusoniae is a plant that is quite resistant to the usual pests and diseases, but sensitive to excess moisture in the roots.

Riversdale Freesia is easily propagated by dividing the corms.
