Care of the plant Lunaria annua or Annual honesty

The genus Lunaria, family Brassicaceae, includes 2 species of plants: an annual (Lunaria annua) and a perennial (Lunaria rediviva). There are varieties of variegated leaves.

Common names: Annual honesty, Honesty. This species is native to the Balkans and south west Asia.

They are branched herbaceous plants of pyramidal bearing that reach 1 meter (3.28 feet) in height. The leaves are serrated and simple. The flowers, purple-pink or white, have 4 petals, appear in terminal racemes and are 1.5 cm (0.59") wide. The most interesting are the curious flat fruits, oval in shape and silver in color.

They are used in shady areas of the garden and in pots for terraces in shady areas. The fruits are used as cut flowers; remove the outer membranes of the fruits so that they have a suitable ornamental effect.

The Lunaria annua needs a shade or semi-shade exposure and annual average temperatures of 15-25 ºC (59-77 ºF).

They grow in any type of soil but prefer that they contain organic matter and a medium consistency.

Water moderately throughout the year without allowing the soil to dry out completely.

Fertilize with compost or humus in the fall.

They are plants resistant to pests and diseases; you just have to avoid drought and excessive humidity.

They propagate from seeds sown in the final location in spring at the rate of 3 seeds together, separating one group from another half a meter.
