The genus Firmiana, family Malvaceae, comprises 15 species of trees and shrubs native to Asia. Some species of the genus are: Firmiana simplex, Firmiana major, Firmiana colorata, Firmiana hainanensis. Common names: Chinese parasol tree, Chinese parasoltree. This species is native to Asia. They are fast-growing deciduous trees that reach 20 meters (65.6 feet) in height and live for more than 100 years. They have large 40 cm (15.74") leaves and a shape similar to Acer leaves. The small flowers appear in clusters, are yellow and then turn red. They bloom in late spring. They produce decorative and curious fruits that open like a flower showing round and smooth seeds. Chinese parasol tree is used as a shade tree in gardens as isolated specimens, on streets and in public parks. The seeds are used in Chinese medicine. Firmiana simplex can be grown in full sun or light shade exposure, protected from the wind. It resists light frosts. Chinese parasoltree can grow in any type of well-drained soil, deep and containing organic matter. It does not resist transplantation well. Water abundantly during the summer; reduce watering until winter and increase watering in early spring. The plant warns that it needs water because the leaves become flaccid. Fertilize with manure in the fall. Chinese parasol tree does not need pruning. Firmiana simplex is a resistant plant to the usual pests and diseases. Chinese parasoltree propagates by cuttings in summer or by seeds that take 2 months to germinate. |
