Care of the cactus Austrocylindropuntia yanganucensis or Yanganuco cactus

The genus Austrocylindropuntia, family Cactaceae, includes 11 species of cacti native to South America. Some species are: Austrocylindropuntia yanganucensis, Austrocylindropuntia shaferi, Austrocylindropuntia vestita, Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica, Austrocylindropuntia subulata, Austrocylindropuntia salmiana.

Common name: Yanganuco cactus. Scientific synonyms: Opuntia yanganucensis, Tephrocactus yanganucensis. This species is native to Peru.

Austrocylindropuntia yanganucensis is a cactus with a cylindrical stem and delicate light green segments that reaches 3 meters (9.84 fet) in height. The ellipsoidal segments measure 5 cm (1.96") in length and the areoles have 1-4 spines up to 2 cm (0.78") in length. The attractive flowers are bright yellow and measure 5 cm (1.96") in length.

Yanganuco cactus is used in rockeries, in cactus and succulent gardens and in pots for patios and terraces.

Austrocylindropuntia yanganucensis needs full sun exposure and a warm, dry climate. It is best not to expose it to frost.

Tephrocactus yanganucensis prefers poor, very well-drained soil: stony, sandy or rocky.

Yanganuco cactus is a very drought-resistant cactus that needs very moderate watering, waiting for the substrate to dry completely.

Fertilize once in spring with mineral fertilizer for cacti, although it is not strictly necessary.

Pruning is not necessary.

Austrocylindropuntia yanganucensis is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases but very sensitive to excess moisture in the roots.

Opuntia yanganucensis is propagated from seeds sown in spring and by segment cuttings.
