The genus Buddleja, family Buddlejaceae, comprises 100 species of shrubs and trees native to America, Asia, and Africa. Some species are: Buddleja parviflora, Buddleja salviifolia, Buddleja saligna, Buddleja davidii, Buddleja auriculata, Buddleja globosa, Buddleja alternifolia, Buddleja crispa, Buddleja fallowiana, Buddleja colvilei. Common name: Butterfly Bush. This species is native to Mexico. They are dioecious evergreen trees or shrubs that reach 10 meters (32.8 feet) in height. The lanceolate leaves are greyish-green. They produce flower panicles filled with small white or yellowish-white tubular flowers. Butterfly Bush is used in bushy groups, as isolated specimens and on dry and sunny slopes. In Mexico it is used as a medicinal plant. Buddleja parviflora prefers full sun exposure but will also grow in partial shade. Withstands frost down to -10 ºC (14 ºF). Butterfly Bush grows in any type of soil that has good drainage. Water moderately waiting for the substrate to dry. They resist drought quite well. Fertilize with a little compost at the end of winter. Buddleja parviflora can be lightly pruned after flowering to maintain a compact habit. Butterfly Bush is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases. Buddleja parviflora is propagated by cuttings and from seeds sown in spring. |
