Care of the plant Eryngium triquetrum or Eryngium creticum

The genus Eryngium, family Apiaceae, includes about 250 species of herbaceous plants with a cosmopolitan distribution. Some species are: Eryngium triquetrum, Eryngium planum, Eryngium agavifolium, Eryngium carlinae, Eryngium paniculatum, Eryngium giganteum, Eryngium tricuspidatum.

Scientific synonym: Eryngium creticum. This species is native to Western Mediterranean.

Eryngium triquetrum is a very branched annual herbaceous plant that reaches 50 cm (19.68") in height. The stems are an attractive blue or violet colour. It has very few pointed leaves at the base of the branches. It produces whitish flower heads. It blooms in summer.

Eryngium creticum is used in borders and flowerbeds (combined with plants with yellow flowers), on dry and sunny slopes, in pots for patios, terraces and balconies, in rockeries and as an indoor plant next to a sunny window.

Eryngium triquetrum prefers full sun exposure and a dry and warm climate. It resists non-persistent frosts.

The soil can be normal well-drained garden soil with plenty of coarse sand and containing organic matter. The pot is transplanted in early spring.

Water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry completely. It has good resistance to drought.

Fertilize with a little organic matter at the time of planting.

Eryngium triquetrum does not need pruning.

It is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to excess moisture in the roots.

Eryngium creticum propagates from seeds sown in late winter or early spring.
