Plantago major is a herbaceous plant with rhizomes that reach 50 cm (1.64 feet) in height. The large oval leaves are arranged in a rosette and are light green in colour. It produces erect cylindrical spikes with tiny yellowish-white flowers. It blooms from spring to early autumn.

Common plantain is used in flowerbeds, in light undergrowth and in pots for patios and terraces. It has numerous medicinal properties.

Plantago major needs full sun exposure and a warm or temperate climate. It does not resist frost.

Greater plantain grows in sandy soil with excellent drainage; it does not grow well in clay soil.

Water regularly so that the soil maintains a little moisture; wait until the surface of the substrate has dried.

Fertilize in early spring with compost or manure and mineral fertilizer.

Prune off wilted flower spikes.

Plantago major is a plant that is quite resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to intense cold; some caterpillars can devour the leaves.

Common plantain is propagated from seeds sown in spring or by division also in spring.
