Care of the succulent plant Ruschia lineolata or Carpet of Stars |
The genus Ruschia, family Aizoaceae, comprises 400 species of succulent plants native to South Africa. Some species are: Ruschia lineolata, Ruschia macowanii, Ruschia uncinata, Ruschia tumidula. Common name: Carpet of Stars. Scientific synonym: Mesembryanthemum lineolatum. They are succulent plants with a creeping habit that reach 60 cm (23.6") in width. The leaves are fleshy, triangular in section, deep green with small light spots and slightly serrated margins. The flowers are pink and measure 2 cm (0,78") in diameter. They bloom in summer. Carpet of Stars is used to cover dry and sunny slopes, in rockeries, in low walls and in pots and planters. It's ideal for Mediterranean coastal gardens. It combines very well with plants of the genera Mammillaria, Sedum, Gazania, Cerastium, Felicia, Drosanthemum, Lampranthus and Crassula. Ruschia lineolata needs full sun exposure and a warm climate. Resists light and occasional frosts. Mesembryanthemum lineolatum grows in any well-drained soil, be it rocky, limestone, sandy, poor or stony. Always water moderately, waiting for the substrate to dry completely. In autumn and winter they usually keep up with the rains. It's very resistant to drought. Carpet of Stars does not need fertilizers or pruning. Ruschia lineolata is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to excess humidity. Mesembryanthemum lineolatum is propagated by cuttings in spring or fall. |
