Care of the plant Delphinium requienii or Requin's Larkspur |
The genus Delphinium, family Ranunculaceae, comprises 200 species of herbaceous plants native to the Northern Hemisphere. Some species are: Delphinium requienii, Delphinium elatum, Delphinium grandiflorum, Delphinium zalil, Delphinium cardinale, Delphinium ajacis, Delphinium consolida, Delphinium staphisagria. Common names: Requin's Larkspur, Requien's Delphinium. This species is native to the Mediterrannean region. Delphinium requienii is an erect herbaceous perennial plant that reaches more than 1 metre (3.28 feet) in height when it flowers. The attractive, bright green leaves are star-shaped. The blue flowers appear on long, vertical spikes. It blooms in summer every 2 years (biennial plant). Requin's Larkspur is used in rockeries, in pots for patios and terraces, in borders and flowerbeds, as a cut flower for floral decorations and on dry, sunny slopes. It is ideal for Mediterranean coastal gardens. Delphinium requienii needs full sun exposure and a warm or temperate climate. It resists frosts down to -10 ºC (14 ºF). Although it grows in almost any type of well-drained soil, normal well-drained garden soil with coarse sand and containing organic matter is recommended. Water regularly, waiting for the substrate to dry. Requien's Delphinium resists a few days of drought well. Fertilize with compost in autumn and in spring with mineral fertilizer every 30 days. Prune wilted inflorescences and dry leaves. Requin's Larkspur is resistant to common pests and diseases but sensitive to waterlogging. Delphinium requienii is propagated from seeds sown in spring and from cuttings in spring or summer. |
