Care of the shrub Fuchsia corymbiflora or Cluster-flowered fuchsia

The genus Fuchsia, family Onagraceae, comprises 100 species of shrubs native to Central and South America, Tahiti and New Zealand. Some species are: Fuchsia corymbiflora, Fuchsia magellanica, Fuchsia arborescens, Fuchsia boliviana, Fuchsia thymifolia, Fuchsia x hybrida, Fuchsia excorticata, Fuchsia microphylla, Fuchsia lycioides.

Common names: Cluster-flowered fuchsia, Vine Fuchsia, Peruvian Berrybush. This species is native to Peru.

Fuchsia corymbiflora is a semi-evergreen shrub with fine branches that reaches 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) in height. The leaves, oblonco-lanceolate in shape, are dark green and have reddish veins. It produces attractive tubular red flowers. It blooms in summer and early autumn.

Cluster-flowered fuchsia is used in bush groups, as an isolated specimen and in pots for patios and terraces.

Fuchsia corymbiflora needs full sun exposure and a tropical or subtropical climate. It does not resist frost.

The soil must be clayey and contain abundant organic matter. If grown in a pot, a mixture of 1 part heather soil, 1 part manure, 2 parts garden soil and 1 part coarse sand can be made.

Water frequently so that the substrate never dries out completely but without flooding. Fuchsia corymbiflora does not tolerate drought.

Fertilize monthly in spring and summer with mineral fertilizer and with compost in autumn.

Prune lightly at the end of winter to maintain a compact shape.

Fuchsia corymbiflora does not present serious problems with pests and diseases if it does not suffer from drought or intense cold.

Cluster-flowered fuchsia is propagated in spring or summer by means of semi-woody cuttings.
