Care of the tree Juglans californica or California black walnut |
The Juglans genus, family Juglandaceae, is made up of about 20 species of trees with cosmopolitan distribution. Some species are: Juglans regia, Juglans australis, Juglans ailantifolia, Juglans nigra, Juglans cinerea. Common names: California black walnut, Southern California Walnut. This species is native from California. California black walnut is a small tree or a large deciduous shrub with a rounded shape that reaches 9 meters (29.52 feet) in height. The large pinnate leaves have 11-19 lanceolate leaflets with serrated edges and are dark green. The flowers, yellowish green, are not of decorative interest. The fruits are small nuts with a thick shell. Southern California Walnut is used to form screens, as isolated specimens and planted next to water courses. Juglans californica can grow in full sun and semi-shade exposures. It resists frosts up to -6 ºC (20 ºF). California black walnut grows in any type of soil but prefers good drainage. Southern California Walnut resists drought well so it needs moderate watering waiting for the substrate to dry; in summer, abundant watering once a month is sufficient. Fertilizer is not necessary. Juglans californica can be lightly pruned at the end of winter to maintain a compact shape. California black walnut is a plant resistant to the usual pests and diseases. Southern California Walnut propagates from seeds sown in spring. |
