Care of the bulbous plant Leucojum aestivum or Summer snowflake |
The genus Leucojum, family Liliaceae, comprises 9 species of bulbous plants native to Europe. Some species are: Leucojum aestivum, Leucojum vernum, Leucojum autumnale, Leucojum roseum. Common names: Summer snowflake, Loddon lily. This species is native to Europe. They are bulbous plants that reach 50 cm (19.68") in height. They have thin, glossy green leaves with rounded tips. The pretty white flowers are shaped like a hanging bell. They bloom in late spring or early summer. Summer snowflake is used in rockery, in groups and next to ponds and swimming pools. Leucojum aestivum needs a light shade or sun exposure in the early or late hours of the day. If the weather is cold, place it in direct sun. It does not resist intense heat. The soil can be a mixture of garden substrate with leaf mulch, peat, and coarse sand. Water regularly but with little amount of water during the growing season. Stop watering when flowering ends so that the bulbs rest. Leucojum aestivum is a plant quite resistant to diseases and pests; it can sometimes be attacked by snails and slugs. Loddon lily propagates from seeds or by division of the bulb; plant the bulbs 6 cm (2.36") deep in late winter or early spring. |
