The genus Kalanchoe, family Crassulaceae, comprises 100 species of succulent plants native to Asia, Africa and Europe. Some species are: Kalanchoe beharensis, Kalanchoe longiflora, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, Kalanchoe tomentosa, Kalanchoe daigremontiana, Kalanchoe gastonis-bonnieri, Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, Kalanchoe uniflora, Kalanchoe manginii, Kalanchoe pinnata, Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi, Kalanchoe pumila, Kalanchoe marmorata. Common names: Feltbush, Felt bush, Velvet elephant ear, Elephant's ear kalanchoe. This species is native to southern Madagascar. They are succulent plants with a shrubby habit that reach 3 meters (9.84 feet) in height. The large leaves are fleshy and opposite, triangular in shape and velvety in texture. The flowers have a jar-shaped corolla with 4 welded petals. They bloom in spring. These easy-to-grow plants need full sun or semi-shade exposure. Kalanchoe beharensis does not resist temperatures below 7 ºC (44.6 ºF). The soil can be a mixture of 1/4 coarse sand, 1/4 peat, and 1/2 leaf mulch. Water frequently from spring to fall; reduce watering in winter (keep the substrate slightly moist). Velvet elephant ear is a plant quite resistant to diseases and pests. Felt bush propagates by seeds or by cuttings. |
