Care of the bulbous plant Eucharis x grandiflora or Amazon lily

The genus Eucharis, family Amaryllidaceae, includes 20 species of bulbous plants native to Central and South America. Some species are: Eucharis sanderi, Eucharis amazonica, Eucharis moorei, Eucharis candida.

Common name: Amazon lily. This plant is a natural hybrid between Eucharis moorei and Eucharis sanderi, native to Colombia and Ecuador.

They are bulbous evergreen plants that reach 60 cm (1.96 feet) in height. The large elliptical petiolate leaves are 40 cm (15.74") long and bright green. They produce attractive dangling white flowers similar to Narcissus. They bloom in late summer.

They are commonly used as indoor or greenhouse plants; in tropical climates they are ideal for clear undergrowths and potted for patios and decks.

Eucharis x grandiflora needs a light exposure but no direct sun and a warm and humid environment. The winter safety temperature is 10 ºC (50 ºF); A winter rest at 13-15 ºC (55-59 ºF) is advisable to favor the next flowering.

The soil can be a commercial substrate for indoor plants or a mixture, in equal parts, of heather soil and well-decomposed leaf mulch. Transplant every 2 years in spring.

Water with lime-free water every 3-4 days in spring and summer; reduce watering in autumn (every 7-8 days) and in winter water every 12-14 days. It is important that the ambient humidity is medium-high: place a plate with wet pebbles under the pot.

Fertilize with mineral houseplant fertilizer every 2 weeks in spring and summer.

Prune off wilted flower stems.

They are quite resistant plants to pests and diseases.

They propagate from the bulblets that the mother plant produces.
