Care of the rhizomatous plant Clivia x cyrtanthiflora or Hybrid Clivia

The genus Clivia, family Amaryllidaceae, includes 6 species of rhizomatous plants native to southern Africa. Some species are: Clivia miniata, Clivia robusta, Clivia nobilis.

Common names: Hybrid Clivia, Kaffir lily. It is a hybrid between the species Clivia miniata and Clivia nobilis.

They are perennial rhizomatous plants that reach 60 cm (1.96 feet) in height. They have long, arching, glossy dark green leaves with rounded tips. They produce showy umbels with drooping, red-orange tubular flowers. They bloom in spring but may bloom again in fall. The round fruits are dark in color and turn red when ripe.

They are used in undergrowth, in shady borders and borders, in shady areas of the garden and in pots for patios and terraces.

Clivia x cyrtanthiflora prefers a shady exposure but can grow in semi-shade avoiding direct sun during the hottest hours of the day.

The soil can be a normal garden soil with a little coarse sand and organic matter. Transplant every 4 years in early spring to renew the substrate.

Water regularly so that the substrate never dries out completely; never flood Reduce watering in winter. In summer it is convenient to spray the leaves periodically with lime-free water to clean them.

Fertilize every 2 weeks with mineral fertilizer in spring and summer.

They are plants quite resistant to the usual pests and diseases but sensitive to the accumulation of water in the roots.

They are propagated by division in autumn and from seed sown in spring.
