Care of the plant Clematis x jackmanii or Jackman's Clematis

The genus Clematis, family Ranunculaceae, includes 200 species and numerous varieties and hybrids of climbing plants of cosmopolitan distribution. Some species are: Clematis × jackmanii (hybrid), Clematis vitalba, Clematis flammula, Clematis montana, Clematis armandii, Clematis tangutica, Clematis japonica, Clematis viticella.

Common names: Jackman's Clematis, Large-Flowered Clematis. It's assumed to be a hybrid between the species Clematis lanuginosa and Clematis hendersonii.

They are climbing plants with fragile knotty stems that reach 5 meters (16.4 feet) in height. The wavy leaves have opposite arrangement, ovate-sharp shape and deep green color. The large and showy flowers 12 cm (4.7") in diameter can be blue, white, lilac or pink. They bloom in summer.

They are used in pots and planters for terraces and patios, in greenhouses and to cover pergolas, columns and walls in cool areas of the garden.

Clematis x jackmanii needs shade or semi-shade exposure, always avoiding direct sun in the middle of the day. They do not resist frost.

The soil can be a normal garden substrate to which humus, heather soil, leaf mulch, coarse sand, and manure or compost will be added.

Water frequently so that the substrate never dries completely but without flooding. They do not resist drought.

Fertilize every 20 days with mineral fertilizer during spring and summer.

Prune lightly at the end of winter to favor the next flowering.

They are sensitive plants to excess watering, intense cold and drought.

They are propagated from seeds sown in spring, by air layering and by semi-woody cuttings in summer.
